In short #
denchargi helps you find, save, and contribute electric-vehicle charging stations on the OpenStreetMap map. It is built to collect as little personal data as possible:
- No accounts are required to browse the map. Signing in is optional and uses your existing OpenStreetMap account.
- No advertising or tracking software is used, ever.
- Crash and diagnostics reporting is off by default. The app includes optional crash/diagnostics reporting (Sentry) that does nothing unless you turn it on yourself in Advanced settings. When enabled, it sends anonymous diagnostics only — no advertising, no profiling, and no real-world identity (unless you choose to type contact details into the optional feedback form).
- Your location stays on your device. It is used only to centre the map and measure distances; it is never sent to us or stored.
- We operate no servers and hold no database about you. The data you see comes directly from OpenStreetMap-ecosystem services, and anything you save is stored only on your device. At launch the app fetches one small configuration file from our website (see “App configuration check at launch”); that request carries no account or identifier.

What the app does and does not collect #
We do not collect #
- We do not run advertising or tracking software.
- We do not collect crash reports or usage statistics unless you opt in to the optional diagnostics feature described in “Optional diagnostics (Sentry)” below. It is off by default.
- We do not maintain any account, profile, or database about you on our side.
- We do not sell or share personal data with anyone for marketing.
Data processed on your device #
The following stays on your device and is not transmitted to us (we have no servers to receive it):

You can erase all of this at any time by signing out (which deletes your tokens) and/or uninstalling the app.
Backups. From the profile screen you can export your saved stations and contribution counters to a single backup file, which the app hands to your device’s share sheet — you choose where it goes (a file, a cloud drive, another app). The backup deliberately contains no sign-in tokens and no other personal data: only the public charger entries you saved and two counters. Once exported, the file is under your control; the app never uploads it anywhere itself.
Location #
If you grant permission, the app reads your device location to centre the map on your position and to calculate how far chargers are from you. Location access is requested only while you are using the app (“when in use”); the app does not track your location in the background.
Your precise coordinates are not sent to us or to any third party. However, because the app fetches map tiles and charging-station data for the area you are viewing, the map region around you is necessarily included in those requests to the map and data providers listed below.
You can decline or revoke location permission at any time in your device settings; the app remains usable, and you can search for places by name instead.
App configuration check at launch #
Each time it starts, the app downloads one small configuration file
(app-config.json) from our website, denchargi.lauver.dev. The file contains
only app-wide settings — currently a feature flag for place search and the
minimum supported app version — and the request carries no account, identifier,
or personal data. As with any web request, your IP address is visible to the
website’s hosting provider (Cloudflare) at the network level; we hold no user
database and do not use this request to identify you. See the
Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
Your OpenStreetMap account and contributions #
Signing in is optional and only needed to contribute. The app uses OpenStreetMap’s official OAuth 2.0 sign-in; we never see your OpenStreetMap password. Sign-in tokens are stored in your device’s secure storage.
Important: OpenStreetMap is a public, open database. If you add or edit a charging station, or report a problem (which creates an OpenStreetMap “Note”), that contribution is public and permanently attributed to your OpenStreetMap username, under OpenStreetMap’s terms — exactly as if you had edited OpenStreetMap directly. This is how OpenStreetMap works and is outside our control. Please review the OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy before contributing.
Optional diagnostics (Sentry) #
The app includes an optional crash-and-diagnostics feature, powered by Sentry. It is off by default and does nothing unless you switch it on under Advanced settings → diagnostics. The setting is read when the app starts, so turning it on or off takes effect on the next launch.
When it is off (the default), no diagnostics software runs and nothing is sent — there is no reporting wired up at all.
When you turn it on, the app sends anonymous diagnostics to Sentry to help us find and fix crashes and performance problems. We have deliberately configured it to carry no personal data and no real-world identity:
- What is sent: crash and error reports, diagnostic logs, and performance and startup measurements (traces and profiles). Each report includes breadcrumbs — a short trail of recent in-app activity (screens visited, web requests made) used to reconstruct what led to an error. For web requests the breadcrumb records the request’s address; for a place search that address includes the search text you typed, so recent search terms can appear in an error report. It also captures session replays — short recordings of app sessions to reproduce errors — sampled at roughly 10% of sessions and on every error. In replays, all text and images are masked, so no on-screen content (names, search terms, labels) is recorded.
- Optional feedback form: when diagnostics is enabled, Advanced settings also offers a “Send feedback” form. If you use it, the message you type — and a contact email, only if you choose to enter one — is sent to Sentry together with the per-install ID below. Nothing is ever auto-filled: no email or account detail is attached unless you type it yourself, and nothing is sent unless you press send.
- The only identifier attached automatically is an opaque, randomly generated per-install ID. It is not your OpenStreetMap account, username, or email, and cannot be linked back to them.
- Non-identifying technical tags accompany reports: your app version and build, your language/locale, how the app was installed (TestFlight, App Store, or development build), whether the launch was a fresh install or an upgrade, how many times the app has launched, and whether you have set a custom data server.
- What is deliberately not sent: Sentry’s “send default PII” setting is disabled, so the SDK does not attach your IP address, device name, file paths, network headers, or on-screen text to reports. (As with any internet request, your IP is visible to Sentry’s servers at the network level, but it is not stored on the diagnostic events.)
Sentry processes this data on servers in the United States. See the Sentry Privacy Policy. We rely on your consent (the opt-in toggle) as the lawful basis for this processing. You can withdraw it at any time by switching the toggle off, which stops all further reporting on the next launch; reports and feedback already sent are retained by Sentry under its own retention schedule.
Third-party services the app connects to #
To work, the app makes direct network requests to the services below. Each receives your IP address (unavoidable for any internet request) and the specific data noted. We do not control these services; their own privacy policies apply.

A note on Google Fonts: the app downloads its fonts from Google’s servers
(fonts.gstatic.com) the first time it runs, after which they are cached on your
device. As a result, your IP address reaches Google on that first fetch. Google
states that it does not use these requests to create profiles or serve ads. We
are evaluating bundling the fonts directly into the app to remove this request
in a future version.
How we use the data #
The limited processing above exists solely to provide the app’s features: showing the map, finding and saving chargers, calculating distances, and — if you choose — contributing to OpenStreetMap. If you opt into diagnostics, we use the reports to find and fix crashes and performance problems, and — if you send feedback — to read and act on it. We do not use any data for profiling, advertising, or automated decision-making.
Data retention #
- On-device data (saved stations, cache, preferences, sign-in tokens) is kept until you delete it by signing out or uninstalling the app. Backup files you export are under your own control.
- We retain nothing, because we operate no servers that store your data.
- Diagnostics and feedback you opted into are retained by Sentry under its own retention schedule; contact us to request their deletion.
- Contributions to OpenStreetMap are retained by OpenStreetMap under its own policy and cannot be removed by us.
Children #
The app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal data from children. It contains no advertising or social features.
Your rights under the GDPR #
If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, and to data portability. Because we hold no database about you, most of this is in your direct control:

Access / portability: your data lives on your device (and, for contributions, in your public OpenStreetMap account).

Erasure / restriction: sign out and/or uninstall the app to remove all on-device data. For data held by third parties (e.g. OpenStreetMap, or a data server you selected), contact that service.

Diagnostics and feedback: if you opted into the optional diagnostics feature, you can withdraw consent at any time by switching the toggle off in Advanced settings; reporting stops on the next launch. Reports and feedback already sent are held by Sentry under its own retention policy — contact us and we can help request their deletion.
Lawful bases. We rely on your consent for location access (which you can withdraw in device settings) and for the optional diagnostics and feedback features (which you can withdraw by turning the toggle off), and on the performance of the service you requested (legitimate interest / contract) for the network requests needed to display the map, check the app configuration, and submit the contributions you initiate.
International transfers. The Google Fonts request described above, and the optional diagnostics data (Sentry) if you enable it, may be processed on servers outside the EEA (e.g. the United States). You can avoid the Google Fonts request by using the app offline after fonts have cached (or it will be removed if the fonts are bundled in a future version), and you can avoid the diagnostics transfer entirely by leaving the diagnostics toggle off.

App store disclosures #
For transparency, and to match the data-collection labels shown on the App Store and Google Play:
- Location: used only on your device for app functionality; not collected by us, not linked to your identity, not used for tracking.
- Identifiers / contact info: none collected by us. (If you opt into diagnostics, an opaque per-install ID is used, which is not linked to your identity; if you also submit the optional feedback form, the message and any contact email you type are sent to Sentry.)
- Diagnostics / crash data: collected only if you opt in to the optional diagnostics feature; anonymous, and not linked to your identity.
- No data is collected for tracking across apps or websites.
- The only personal data leaving your device goes to the third-party services listed above, for the app’s core functionality or — for diagnostics and feedback — only with your consent.
Changes to this policy #
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at denchargi.lauver.dev/privacy with a new effective date. Material changes will be reflected in the app or its store listing.
